Investment basics
Asset classes are the building blocks of investment. They comprise of two groups:
Growth Assets
- Shares
- Property
- Private equity
- Infrastructure
Defensive Assets
- Fixed interest
- Cash
- Absolute return funds
Growth assets have the potential for long-term growth, but carry more investment risk.
Defensive assets tend to produce lower returns, but more stable returns over the long term.
Things to consider
When choosing how to invest your retirement money, you may wish to consider:
- How much investment risk are you comfortable with?
- How much investment time you have on your side?
- Achieving a balance with any other investments you may have; and,
- Your requirements for cash withdrawals to cover planned or unexpected expenses.
